Hammar's mill

The mill was built in the middle of the 19th century. The strange thing about this mill is that it used to stand near Friggar's mill, but was moved in 1906 to its current location.

The owner of the mill was then Mårten Broman (Bertil Broman's grandfather). Building and millwork were taken down piece by piece and rebuilt on the new site.

Bertil Broman has told that many Fårö residents came to Mårten Broman to get help with grinding their grain. They knew that Mårten's grinding was of good quality and knew well how much they had to pay for the work. The grinding cost was 1 kroner for a whole barrel, 50 öre for half and 25 öre for a lop. Mårten called this income snus money and it was also this money that was spent on snus.

In 1924, the mill was renovated and got, among other things, new mill shaft, new wings, wind spiers and press. The mill was then owned by Tyka Broman (Bertil Broman's uncle). He had Wilhelm Söderdahl, Broa, to help with the restoration work.

In the early 1940s, the mill lost its wings and thus the mill's grinding era was over. In the 1960s, the mill building was restored and for a few years it was occasionally used for leisure accommodation. In 1992, the mill got a new roof. One of the millstones is outside the building.

Here you can see what Mårten Broman's mill at Hammars looked like when it was still in operation. The photo was taken in the early 1940s.
