Free camping on Fårö

One of the best ways to feel one with nature, must be to camp and Fårö is the perfect place with its beautiful nature and fresh air. But the saddest thing that can happen is that someone comes in the morning and complains. So what about Fårö?

Here are some tips to make your camping a memorable part of the trip!

What does the Right of Public Access say?

To easily sum up the Right of Public Access, you can say "Do not disturb, do not destroy" and then some parts of the tent you should think extra about:

  • Place: Choose a discreet place, which does not disturb residents and as tenting may include a little digging and hanging, this should be done with respect, so that landowners do not see it as destructive. The best thing is to leave the place you found it - or better! If you have plans to camp on the beach, we want to stop you immediately. There is a good chance that it is a beach protection area and falls under the category "Do not disturb…". The best tip is to put the tent in the woods. (Better opportunities to attach the tent)
NOTE! On Fårö we have many nature reserves & bird protection areas. In these it is forbidden to camp. See more here: Fårö Nature and bird protection areas.
  • Toilet condition: When it comes to the laws of distress, it is always best to be wise. Place the tent at a strategic distance from a restaurant, a café or a public toilet. See toilets on Fårö.
  • Firing / grilling: Stay up to date on any fire regulations. During the summer, these can be changed day by day.
If you are looking for barbecue places, see barbecue areas on Fårö. Disposable grills may be an option for many, however note that disposable grills can have a low ground level and can therefore damage or burn the ground below. This can be considered as land destruction.
  • Group camping: In the case of group camping, you should in any case contact the landowner
