Avaeken

Important! The oak stands on private land and special consideration should be observed when visiting the site,

On one of the farms at Ava is the famous Avaeken.  although you are always welcome to sit down for a while and relax under the mighty crown. Carl von Linné was already impressed by Avaeken, when he and his entourage visited Fårö for a couple of summer days in 1741. At Avagården, which "looked covered and decent", they took a break and "here we cooled off in the scorching heat under a large oak, who stood in the yard". In 2007, the 300th anniversary of Linné's birth was celebrated and Avaeken was one of the selected places to visit on Gotland.

It is said that the Avaeken can be up to a thousand years old, so even when Linné rested in the shade of the great tree, it had already reached a considerable age. Linnaeus measured the circumference of the trunk at 7 cubits, i.e. just over four meters. In 1898, the trunk was measured at 9 cubits, close to five and a half meters. Since then, the tribe's growth has stalled. The oak is now scarred with age. In 1962, great efforts were made to preserve the tree. They removed all the rotten wood, coated the inside with tar, filled the cavities with concrete and braced up the strongest branches. Since then, Avaeken is said to have been given a new life and new shoots have appeared on the trunk.
