Föreläsning + Samtal | Lecture + Talk: Färdigforskat om Bergman? | Are we done with Ingmar Bergman?

A Companion to Ingmar Bergman (Wiley-Blackwell, 2023).

Daniel Humphreys senaste arbete kretsar kring ”krafterna” i Ingmar Bergmans verk.

Professor D.A. Bland hans många filmrelaterade publikationer finns Second Time Around: From Art House to DVD (2021), och Hidden Hitchcock (2016).

In recent years, the international research on Bergman has expanded in all directions. Ever since the director’s own archive was opened to researchers in 2005, the focus have shifted from theological and philosophical issues to include new exciting fields. This year, Bergman Week receives a unique visit from three American researchers and Bergman scholars. They will present their latest works, soon to be included in the new Bergman antology A Companion to Ingmar Bergman (Wiley-Blackwell, 2023) and afterwards, together with the Belgian Sweden-based film scholar Jono van Belle, break down the trends in Bergman studies today.

Daniel Humphrey is Associate Professor of Performance Studies at Texas A&M University, where he teaches film studies and queer theory. He is the author of Queer Bergman: Sexuality, Gender, and the European Art Cinema (2013) and Archaic Modernism: Queer Poetics in the Cinema of Pier Paolo Pasolini (2020) and numerous articles on queer film, horror cinema, auteurism, and European modernist film.

Following the Forces

This paper assesses Ingmar Bergman’s exploration of the concept of “forces” (krafterna) through that concept’s origins via dramatist August Strindberg and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Dr. Humphrey looks at the concept’s thematic presence in Persona, Hour of the Wolf, and A Passion and argues that a better understanding of it is key to unlocking Bergman’s cinema in the 21st Century.

James Bogdanski teaches film studies in southern California where he also pursues screenwriting (with one of his scripts taking the top drama series prize at the Austin Film Festival). He specializes in feminist and queer theory, with an emphasis on gothic horror.

‘Unborn Sorrow, Ripe in Fortune’s Womb’: Maternity and the Female Abject in Bergman

This paper examines the central but often overlooked role of the concept of the abject in Ingmar Bergman’s films. Of primary interest is the way in which the abject is situated in his female characters not only as a radical, destabilizing force but also as a mode of containment. Nowhere is this contradiction more pronounced than in Bergman’s recurring and complicated fixation with the generative capacities of women. Bogdanski will trace the evolution of this motif through Summer with Monika, Persona, Cries and Whispers, and Fanny and Alexander.

D.A. Miller, for many years the John F. Hotchkis Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught literature and film, has most recently been a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo.  His numerous publications on film include the BFI Classics volume on 8½ (new edition, 2022), Second Time Around: From Art House to DVD (2021), and Hidden Hitchcock (2016).  A collection of his essays on gay-themed movies is forthcoming in Italian under the title Bellissimo: Il film a tema gay. He is a member of the American Academy.

Marionettes’ Homosexual Surprise:

In a surprising final reveal reminiscent of detective fiction, the psychiatrist in From the Life of Marionettes concludes that the film’s protagonist is a “latent homosexual.”  The paper considers the value of this unexpected—and undecidable—diagnosis in understanding the film.
