Olof Palme's memorial site
Olof Palme, Sweden's Prime Minister 1969-76, and 1982-86, spent thirty summers on Fårö. Over time, he developed a strong affinity with the island's nature, culture and uniqueness, and he got to know many of the Sheep Islanders as close friends. Among other things, Olof Palme was there to inaugurate Nanten's mill at Butleks, in the summer of 1974, together with several thousand participants. Olof Palme's life ended with the shot on Sveavägen on February 28, 1986. Until the very end, he was a peacemaker in various conflicts around the world. The Fårö Social Democratic Association wants to honor Olof Palme with this memorial site. The memorial site is a sculpture group shaped like a circle and in it visitors will be able to sit down on seven large "halls" made of limestone. One of the halls in the sculpture group is placed on a higher pillar to serve as a landmark. It is Olof Palme's international work that inspired the artistic design. But it is a meeting place that will remind visitors of the ancient coastal industry and cultural history of the people of Fårö. "Halls" are Fårömål and refer to small oval limestone stones created by the sea and which fishermen on Fårö previously used as sinkers in fishing nets. Such nets, with hundreds of small “halls”, could be seen in use as late as the 1960s. In the summer of 1985, the Faroese people gave a small stone as a gift to Olof Palme with an inscription wishing him good luck in his political work.
The architect and sculptor of the memorial site is Jan Sundström
If you turn away from the memorial site or look to the left of the information board, you can see an orange telephone booth next to Sudersand's resort and bus shelter.
The telephone kiosk that Olof Palme managed Sweden from.
This phone booth stands out of course with its orange color and because you rarely see a phone booth these days. But it also stands out with its historical significance. Olof Palme made many calls from this booth and some Fårö residents say that “It was from this phone booth that Olof Palme ruled Sweden”. The phone booth has changed a lot over time, but has regained its classic orange color (2018) after being painted white for many years.
