Fårö ferry – Sense & etiquette

For many the ferry is just a normal daily routine but for others it is the first part of a new experience. We got in touch with the new Section Manager for the Fårösund Trail, Thomas Nyman to learn something new and brush off some old sense & etiquette.

Is there anything special first-time skiers with Fåröfärjan should think about?
- Do not stress. Arrive well in advance and pay attention to the instructions given through the info screen and traffic lights.

The experienced ferryers, is there something they usually forget?
- The experienced tend to be a little too optimistic about time. You often see them coming at full speed down the hill while the barrier is about to close.

When is it the turn of hikers and cyclists to get off / on the ferry?
- The easiest thing is to wait for the cars to drive on / off, but if you can safely walk along the side, it is not wrong.

Can you get out of the car during the journey across the strait?
- Yes, you usually get it, but now during the pandemic we urge you not to do it.
It is not a ban, but a call.

How is access to the toilet?
- There is a toilet in Fårösund in the parking lot at Frisören, which is about 100 meters above the ferry. LINK It is managed by Region Gotland and is open during the summer. The toilet at Broa is managed by the Swedish Transport Administration and is open from approximately the Ascension weekend. We don't have exact times there.
The toilets on board are unfortunately closed as the journey is under 15 minutes and we have had some damage.

How to book the night ferry?
- Just call 0771-656565 and state "Staff", then "Fårösundsleden", 10 minutes before departure during our night trips.
(timetable - can be read here.)

Why exactly 10 minutes before?
- It does not have to be exact, but around 10 minutes. This is so that the staff has time to get ready and so that skiers do not have to call hours or days before.

Who can drive in the priority field?
During the low season, the priority field is only for buses, taxis and emergency vehicles, but between 1 June and 15 August it is for those registered on Fårö, Gotlanders with work on Fårö, transport and emergency vehicles. However, this is one thing Fårö Bygderåd is currently working on. The goal is to make it possible for Fårö residents to use the field all year round, which I am in favor of.
I myself will put pen to paper soon and encourage this change.

Do you have anything extra to add on the topic "Sense & Etiquette?"
- Yes. Be nice to the staff and understand that they can not drive faster or when it is not time.

ADDITION:
When departing, the zipper principle is followed and first on - first off, unless the ferry staff informs otherwise.
