Conversation | Talk: Bergman and the queer culture | Bergman and Queer Culture

"Had Bergman lived and worked today, I'm sure his films would have been even more queer!" exclaimed the Swedish Film Institute's press manager Jan Göransson in an interview about Eva Beling's hit documentary Pride and Prejudice – A Queer Film History which premiered last spring.

The queer theme can be found consistently in Bergman's life's work. But what significance does Bergman have for queer culture? On site at Fårö, we have three professionals on the subject: Daniel Humphrey, American professor of film studies and author of the book Queer Bergman and the German curator and writer Nils Warnecke who both participate in Eva's documentary, as well as the Belgian Bergman researcher Jono van Belle, university lecturer in media and communication studies with a focus on film at Örebro University.

The conversation is moderated by the Film Institute Anna Håkansson, who himself has a queer theoretical study of Bergman's film The rite in the luggage.

“Had Bergman lived and worked today, I'm sure his films would have been even more queer!”

We agree with Jan Göransson, the Swedish Film Institute's press manager, who exclaimed this during an interview about Eva Beling's documentary Pride and Prejudice – a queer film history that had its premiere this spring.

The queer theme is found throughout Bergman's career. But how important has Bergman been to queer culture? This year we welcome the American author of the book Queer Bergman, professor Daniel Humphrey to Fårö, along with the German curator and author Nils Warnecke and the Belgian Bergman scholar Jono van Belle. Together with the Film Institute's Anna Håkansson they will analyze Bergman's queer legacy.
