Broa mill

The mill was probably built in the latter part of the 18th century. There are some inscriptions in the mill. On one of the logs, the year 10 May 1811 has been carved and in some other places you can read the initials BF – PB – BF

At the 1807 mill tax assessment, there were two mills at Broa. The owners of these were Berndt Nilsson and Stephan Larsson. The former estimated the grinding needs of 12 people, while the latter estimated for 7.

Georg Broström, who was born and lives near Broa, tells about the mill's former owner: "Petter Broman, called "Brofar" (born 1815), inherited the mill from his father. He owned the mill until the mid-1860s, when the widow Lena-Lisa Persson, called "Brolisa", bought the mill. She was born at Vinor in 1813 and died in 1893. She was the widow of Lars Persson, who drowned in the strait together with boatman Löparen, in the spring of 1851. They had two sons; Petter Mikael, born 1844, and Niclas Oskar, born 1849. Sometime in the 1870s, "Brolisa" left the mill to her son Petter Mikael, who now took the name Per Broström. The next owner was his son, John Broström (1870-1937), who inherited the mill around the turn of the century.

It became modern times and the mill was no longer used and had to deteriorate more and more. In 1936, John Broström donated the mill to the Bunge Museum, which now cares for the old treasure.”

It is likely that John Broström's last grinding in the mill took place around the years 1915-1920. After this the mill began to fall into disrepair. We can thank national antiquary Sigurd Curman that this was not allowed to continue. On his visit to Fårö in 1936, he became interested in the old mill. The result was that the Bunge Museum became the new owner and under their patronage the mill was restored, which then gave the mill ongoing care.
